Rather than a title, this ink painting from 1997 is given the letter "A" and dated 1997-09-10, September 10th 1997.
Sometimes I build up textures, painting every dot by hand, then I obscure that obsessiveness with an atomized rain of ink particles.
This painting is a harmony of cultivation with pure spontaneity.
What is the difference between all the thousand intentional actions that brought me to this place, and all those other thousand more that were out of my control?
Why place more significance on the purpose behind my willfulness, than the jewels of surprise that link the chains of chance?
This painting is likewise a marriage of focused intent with the capricious impulses of organized chaos, that move the things and people of the world to collect and disperse, in one place rather than another. Like wandering particles of dust, that find one another, and form planets or even stars, or else, drift.
This painting is a meeting of the driftwood of possibility. Where the connective horizontal crosses paths with the stabilizing vertical, and becomes the local. Where the unknowable seethes with the precursors of knowledge, like spores of pollen that go anywhere, and they cannot be out of place, even in my eye, because they must be everywhere they are, for them to arrive at where they need to be.
The first image of this painting is a direct scan of the artwork without glass. The second picture that appears lighter and with lower contrast, is a photo taken on a cloudy day with the artwork framed behind the glass.
