Resting Travelers Evening Landscape, 1993 - Original Framed Pen Watercolor & Gouache Painting

I painted "Resting Travelers" back when I would get obsessed with how painters created texture, and I would check out every book from every library and learn everything about their technique.

This painting was from when I was deep into Samuel Palmer, and it could almost be one of Palmers paintings, although I have ever seen one in person, and mine is much more abstract. I really liked how they have this scribbled pen under-drawing, and lots of really intuitive mark making, which is how I work so Palmer's style was fun to riff on. 

I also liked that they were often dusk or night landscapes, which is when things start to glow in a fuzzy way that you just don't get in photographs. As my eyes adjust it can still feel the texture of the light, but even on a long exposure the camera just makes it look flat and overemphasizes any obvious light sources while ignoring the subtle luminosity of evening.

I painted "Resting Travelers" at that textural transition point between day and night, when it feels like I can see the individual particles of light that the sun left behind, still vibrating in the air.

This painting dates from 1993, the title is "Resting Travelers, Evening Landscape." I framed it with a gold frame and a linen mat I made when I work at a Picture Framing store. The medium is dipping pen and ink, with watercolor and opaque gouache on paper with a natural deckle. The size of the frame is __x__ and the size of the painting is __x__ inches.
